"Jeff Ruland, a two-time NBA All-Star center/forward, joined the 76ers today as an assistant coach. The 6-10 Ruland also served as an assistant in 1993-94, and had two injury-marred stints with them as a player, in 1986-87 and 1991-92. He spent last season as the head coach of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBA Development League.
"I'm really excited," Ruland said in a brief telephone conversation. "I'm going to work my butt off for (head coach) Maurice Cheeks."
He takes the place of Henry Bibby, whose contract was not renewed.
"That I am able to add a coach with the experience and credentials of Jeff Ruland to my staff is exciting," Cheeks said in a statement.
Ruland retired after appearing in 11 games with the Detroit Pistons in 1992-93. He played and coached at Iona, but was fired after going 2-28 in 2006-07; the Gaels had been 23-8 the previous season. Ruland took them to three MAAC championships, three 20-victory seasons and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
After leading Iona to a 69-21 record as a player, Ruland was selected by the Golden State Warriors with the No. 25 overall pick in the 1980 NBA draft, the second pick in the second round. He spent one season playing in Barcelona, Spain, before coming back to play for the Washington Bullets.
He was acquired by the Sixers in June of 1986 with Cliff Robinson in a deal that sent Moses Malone to Washington. On the same infamous day, the Sixers sent the rights to the No. 1 overall pick in the draft to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Roy Hinson and cash.
Ruland appeared in just 5 games in '86-87 because of a bad knee. His '91-92 season ended with a torn Achilles tendon. He played in only 29 games over the final three seasons of his career."
