382 pitches had been thrown at 100 mph or more this season
How About That?
Through Wednesday, 382 pitches had been thrown at 100 mph or more--faster than any year since at least 2002. According to Baseball Info Solutions, which uses high-speed camera data to record pitch speeds, the majority of the 100+ pitches come from the right hand of Joel Zumaya, a Detroit Tigers reliever. He went on the disabled list in July because of shoulder problems, but his 198 pitches at or above 100 mph--including four at 103--are by far the most this season. But even excluding Mr. Zumaya's totals, this season has already surpassed each of the past two. -- Wall Street Journal
