Commish: NFL giving serious consideration to expanded season
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, on hand Sunday for the first regular-season game at Lucas Oil Stadium, said efforts to expand the regular season to 17 or 18 games are moving forward, with studies being conducted. Bears coach Lovie Smith has said he thinks four preseason games are too many, and you won't find a player interested in more than two or three. 'We're giving serious consideration to it,'' Goodell said. ''There are still significant challenges ahead, but we think it's compelling from the standpoint of the quality of our preseason and reducing that by two, adding those two in the regular season. It'll improve the quality of those two remaining preseason [games], and it'll improve the quality of our product, which is something we're always looking to do.'' Goodell seemed most in favor of 18 regular-season and two preseason games and said a 17-3 setup could be an initial step. How soon? ''I doubt it would happen next year,'' he said. -- Chicago Sun-Times
